Furobashi, a famous bridge along an ancient travel route in the Wakaura section of Wakayama City, Japan, was constructed as a stone arch in the 1850s. The bridge looks much like it did upon its completion and would have been visited by some crew members of the USS Montpelier in September 1945.
Furobashi, a famous bridge along an ancient travel route in the Wakaura section of Wakayama City, Japan, was constructed as a stone arch in the 1850s. The bridge looks much like it did upon its completion and would have been visited by some crew members of the USS Montpelier in September 1945. A few of crew members went shore as volunteers to help repatriate Allied prisoners of war following the end of World War II. When five of the volunteers were turned away from the processing center because of a glut of the workers, they walked into the Wakayama City where they meet people who warmly greeted the American sailors. Today, Furobashi is open to foot traffic. The stone railings of bridge are carved.
